The Brodick Follies - Synopsis
Harry Brodick is an aging soldier of fortune. Harry has led a risky life and planned to retire quietly with his much younger Vietnamese wife, Nan, and their seven-year-old son. But his last score with underworld kingpin Santos Aguilar is jeopardized as Harry draws unwanted attention from international authorities. The interests of Santos and Harry collide.
They meet in the resort town of Thunder Ridge, Colorado, which becomes a hotbed of illegal activity as contract killers mingle with building contractors and even the recently widowed Nan seems to have her own agenda.

Harry Brodick
Abandoned by his father at an early age, and losing his mother shortly thereafter, Harry Brodick was raised by his older sister, and was never able to find emotional security. He embarks on a life of adventures that takes him from the highlands of his native Scotland to the African Congo, the cities of Europe, the shores of the Java Sea, and the Rocky Mountains in the United States.
He is a tall man with a lion’s mane of salt-pepper hair and piercing eyes. Physically fit, he moves with a calculated swagger. Harry is self-educated, loves to read, and has an ambiguous sense of morality. His is a life of excesses, where devils and angels rest on his shoulders, pulling him in opposite directions. Harry is moody; alcoholism taxed his virility, but has not abated his insatiable lust for other women, with terrible consequences.

Nan Brodick
Nan is a Vietnamese orphan with sculpted body and long, silky, black hair. Unusually intelligent, since an early age she has been ambitious and calculating. Educated by American nuns in Southeast Asia, she marries the much-older Harry in exchange for a complete higher education in Europe and the promise of a comfortable life.
Harry pays for her education as a lawyer, but is incapable of providing emotional support. With his moral compass in disarray, he loses her respect. She becomes an asset in his illegal operations, but stays with him only for convenience as well as the security of her son.
As she blooms into a strong, mature woman, Harry’s behavior fuels contempt and she loathes his touch.

CHAPTER ONE
Katanga Province, Belgian Congo
1960
The rainforest had been quiet for over an hour. The government soldiers dozed, taking a much-needed rest. Bullets and mosquitoes had been flying all night. The fog hugged the ground, but rose higher than a man. Harry could not see any of his cohorts, although he could hear some of them whispering.
At first light, before the fog lifted, they knew it was time to move on. The lieutenant gave the order. They inched forward, alone or in small groups, beneath the canopy of mahogany trees. A hundred meters later, not hearing the rustle of footsteps of the others, Harry stopped. He was lost.
Turning in the direction of the last sound, he took five paces before his right foot stepped on air, and he went down. The fighter in the foxhole reacted quickly. The impact, of man against man, knocked their weapons to the ground, and they found themselves in hand-to-hand combat. Twisting and ducking in silence, each tried to best the other, without attracting attention from the wrong side. Harry suffocated as the man tried to choke the life out of him.
Gathering his strength, Harry grabbed the man’s head with his hands. He dug his thumbs into the man’s eyes until he felt the bursting of one of them with a sickening crunch. Howling, the man pulled away. Harry reached for the knife in his boot; it was over as fast as it had begun.
Harry looked at the bearded black man, seeing the empty socket of his right eye, and the void of death on his face. He wiped his clammy hands on his camo pants.
At nineteen, Harry Brodick had killed for the first time.
